Development of a concept for visual acuity determination with the plusoptix
Purpose:
With the help of the concept described in this paper, the determination of visual acuity in children is to be simplified and additionally secured. For this purpose, the plusoptix binocular autorefractometer is to be extended in such a way that in addition to objective refraction, it can also be used for subjective determination of visual acuity.
Material and Methods:
212 subjects between the ages of three and fifteen were examined. For this purpose, visual acuity was determined using both the standard unit of measurement with the LEA symbols and the additional device developed in this work.
Results:
In a few cases there was a deviation from one visual acuity level. However, no tendency can be determined with which method the subjects had greater difficulties. The standard deviation between the two procedures was
less than 0.5.
Conclusion:
The results of the pilot study show that the determination of visual acuity with the aid of the additional device provides similar results to the LEA charts. The extension of the device further improves its usability beyond the classic U examinations.
