Abstract

Purpose: Good eyesight is a basic requirement for safe participation in road traffic. In both Europe and the United States, there are legally regulated minimum vision requirements for obtaining a car driver’s license.

Material and Methods: This article provides an overview of the legal requirements in the European Union (EU) and the USA. Particular attention is paid to visual acuity and supplementary tests.

Results: A minimum visual acuity of 0.5 (binocular) applies throughout Europe, although there are national variations. In the USA, the requirements are regulated by the federal states. Test procedures and repeat intervals differ.

Conclusion: Differences and similarities are identified and discussed with regard to their significance for optometric practice.
